OBITUARY

MR E. H. G. STRINGER Mr Edric Harold Grierson Stringer, who was born in Christchurch in 1882 and lived here for 50 years, died in Hastings last week. As a boy Mr Stringer was a soprano soloist with the Christchurch Cathedral choir, and as a young man he took part in Rugby, rowing and amateur athletics. Later he became choirmaster of St. Stephen’s and St. James’ Anglican Churches in the city, and took part in church affairs. Mr Stringer served in the Boer War and held a captain’s commission in the First World War. He was active in public and political affairs in Christchurch and was a keen worker for the Returned Services’ Association. He took 'more than a passing interest in sport and was responsible for forming the Christchurch Ladies’ Amateur Athletic and Sports Club. He was also founder of the Christchurch Ladies’ Cricket Club, the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Mr Stringer went to Hastings in 1933 as an advertising agent, and worked on the staffs of both the Hawke’s Bay “Herald” and the “Tribune.” In 1943 he retired through ill-health.

Besides his interest in church music, Mr Stringer was a member of the Hastings Citizens’ Band executive, and encouraged the continuance of Maori art and music in both islands. He was a great friend of the Maori people, and to stimulate interest in their culture, he presented the Tauhine Rangiuia Shield for annual competition in song, poi dance and haka. He presented another shield for Maori hockey. Mr Stringer is survived by his wife and two children, Mr Jim Stringer, and Miss Stella Stringer, all of Hastings. Mrs Ida Reynolds, of Christchurch, is a sister.
