“QUEEN OF THE AIR RACE"

LIBRARY ATTENDANT AS CONTESTANT

BORROWERS CHOOSE MISS JUNE TAIGEL

Borrowers of books from the Canterbury Public Library have chosen Miss June Taigel, one of the assistants, as the library’s representative in the “Queen of the Air Race” contest organised by the Air Race Council to raise funds for the London-Christ-church race. Miss Taigel is not sponsored by the library, but received the most votes in a contest organised by the library staff with the permission of the City Librarian (Mr R. N. O’Reilly).

For nearly three weeks photographs of six members of the counter staff have been displayed inside the entrance of the lh front of each photograph there has been a collection box, and borrowers have been able to vote for any of the girls they wanted to represent their library by putting coins into the boxes.. The price of a vote was 3d, and there was no restriction on the number of votes by any borrower. When the library contest closed on Friday more than £2l had been subscribed. This is the equivalent of at least 1000 votes. The sum of £lO 10s will be set aside for Miss Taigel’s entrance fee in the contest, and the remainder of the money will go to the air race funds.

Miss Taigel, who is 22 years of age, was educated at Christchurch Girls’ High School and has been a library assistant for two years. She is on the committee of the High School Old Girls’ Association and for many years has sung in the choir of St. John’s Church, Latimer square. The Kaiapoi Rugby Football Club has offered to give £2 towards the entrance fee for a candidate in the contest if four other Kaiapoi sports bodies will do the same. In a letter received by the Kaiapoi Borough Council last evening the club asked that its offer should be made known to other clubs, so that the town could participate in assisting “such a worthy cause.” The council decided to thank the club for the offer and inform it that the council would like to assist if other clubs took up the proposal.
