CHAMPIONSHIP RACE FOR FIRMS

Teaming excellently for Lane, Walker, Rudkin, C. R. Ogle, E. B. Stroud, and R. Heaps filled fourth, fifth, and sixth places to gain a comfortable win in the teams event when the inter-firms harrier championship was decided on Saturday morning. The race, organised by the Christchurch Firms’ Recreational Association, attracted nearly 40 starters, who raced over a five-mile circuit starting from the Hagley Cricket Oval. Teams were of four, with three to count. K. Gillard (Shell Company) won the individual title by a comfortable margain from K. McKenzie (O’Brien’s).

Setting a fast pace, Ogle led from the start, followed by Gillard, McKenzie, and G. Forrester (Anderson’s, Ltd.). Taking over after two miles, Gillard gradually drew ahead, with gaps to McKenzie and Forrester. McKenzie greatly reduced Gillard’s lead over the last half-mile to finish 30 yards behind. Results:—
