WAGE INCREASES IN AUSTRALIA

1/- TO 5/- IN ALL STATES MELBOURNE. July 17. By a quarterly cost of living adjustment announced today the Australian basic wage rose by amounts from one to five shillings in the various States. The basic wage in State capital cities now ranges from £l2 3s in Sydney to £lO 18s in Brisbane. In Canberra the Treasurer (Mr Arthur Fadden) said that this was the fourth quarter in which the cost of living adjustment had been comparatively small. “It becomes clear that the long, hard battle against inflation is being won, and that Australia is reaping the benefits in a new period of comparative stability,” he said.

The new adjustment meant an average rise of 2s. compared with Ils for the same period last year. The Acting-Leader of the Opposition (Mr A. A. Calwell) said: “The figures show inflation is continuing its evil and injuring course. Every housewife knows that the wage increases are utterly inadequate to meet increased costs.”

The federal director of the Chambers of Commerce (Mr Latham Withall) said the adjustment meant an additional £15,>000,000 in direct labour costs.
