FIERCE BATTLE IN KOREA

“Biggest Artillery Duel Of War” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ■(Rec. 11 p.m.) SEOUL, July 17. Frontline reports to-day emphasised that the South Koreans, still fighting to regain the territory lost earlier this week in the big Chinese offensive, had not yet pushed the Communists back to their original line. Officers described the battle this morning as the biggest artillery fight yet, both sides hitting each other’s troops supply trains with heavy shellfire. The Allied guns fired an unending curtain of high explosive over the heads of the Chinese to stop them bringing up men and ammunition.

Air Force headquarters said that 100 Communist supply vehicles were left destroyed after raids last night.

Dr. Syngman Rhee toured the eastern and west central battlefronts today, accompanied by his Defence Minister, ViceAdmiral Sohn Won 11, and the Chief of Staff, General Sun Yup Paik.

The Allied Air Force said today that transport planes yesterday evacuated the third highest number of wounded soldiers on any one day of the Korean war. Most of those taken from forward airstrips to hospitals in South Korea were Korean soldiers. The Air Force has diverted cargo planes to cope with the increasing flow of wounded.
