MR WHITEMAN’S CAREER

Canterbury has a special interest in Mr J. L. Whiteman and his recordbreaking flight across the Tasman, for he was born in Christchurch and was educated at Christ’s College. His father. Mr J. C. Whiteman, of Fendalton, was once well known as an owner of trotting horses. Mr Whiteman, who is a flight lieutenant on the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve, was born at Papanui. He began flying at the age of 18, after tuition in England, and in the last 20 years has flown in Africa and the Argentine. He served for two years with the Argentine Air Force at Buenos Aires. His duties concerned tests of new aviation fuel. Then he became a charter pilot in Australia.

During the Second World War he served with the Royal Australian Air Force in the South-west Pacific. He left the R.A.A.F. in 1947 and started a charter plane service between Australia and Rome. Later he rejoined the Air Force.
