RECRUITING OF CIVIL PILOTS

CIRCULARS SENT OUT BY GOVERNMENT "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, July 16. The Civil Aviation Branch of the Air Department has circularised some commercial pilots in New Zealand, informing them of vacancies for pilots with Tasman Empire Airways. The Director of Civil Aviation (Mr E. A. Gibson) said this yesterday when the action was criticised at the annual conference of the Aviation Industry Association in Wellington. Mr O. G. James (Hamilton) said he considered the action a breach of confidence. All the records of pilots on the branch files were, he thought, confidential.

In reply, Mr Gibson said the branch, regardless of inconvenience, was willing to release its own employees if it was considered they could be better used in the advancement of aviation in some other field. “We expect the industry to take the same attitude,” he said.

An official of Tasman Empire Airways, asked yesterday if the (company was very short of pilots, said more pilots were definitely needed but the position was by no means desperate. Young pilots particularly were wanted, he said.
