LAUNCH OWAKA SOLD

END OF SERVICE TO PENINSULA BAYS

The sale of the well-known passenger and cargo Jaunch Owaka this week to a North Island buyer brings to an end a service by sea to the Banks Peninsula bays which has been in operation for more than 100 years. The Owaka, which traded to the bays during the week and carried passengers to and from Corsair Bay on Sundays during the summer, has been purchased by Mr W. E. Lane, a launch owner, of Opua, and will be used in the passenger trade in the Bay of Islands. The launch will be shipped from Lyttelton about the end of this month.

Built by Collins and Bell, Auckland. 25 years ago, the Owaka is 47 feet long, with a beam of 16 feet and draws 4 feet 6 inches when loaded. The hull is of double-skinned kauri. The engine, which is the third to be installed, is an 88 horse-power diesel, giving her a spead of 10 knots. The Owaka is licensed to carry 144 passengers. Alternatively she can carry up to 60 bales of wool or 160 crates of cheese. A radio-telephone is installed. Mr Bernard Demichelli has been launch-master during the 25 years the Owaka has been in service.
