CLOTHING IMPORTS DECISION

SPECIAL CONFERENCE OF MANUFACTURERS

Textile and garment manufacturers in the Canterbury district have been invited to meet in Christchurch on July 21 to discuss the Government's decision to allow imports of clothing under certain tariff items. About 70 members of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association trade group are expected to attend the conference. The secretary of the association (Mr R. T. Alston) said yesterday that inquiries throughout New Zealand showed that the manufacturers were seriously disturbed at the Government’s announcement. Tariff items that would be considered included shirts, men’s and boys’ pyjamas, women’s nightwear, hosiery, women’s and girls’ outer garments, bathing costumes, dressing gowns, knitted shirts, underclothing, Knitted outerwear, hats, caps, and millinery.
