U.N. DEBATE ON SAMOA
Committee To Draft ' Resolution NEW YORK, July 10. The. United Nations Trusteeship Council today ended its debate on New Zealand’s administration of Western Samoa, and appointed a committee to draft 4 resolution on the subject. There were seven speakers today. Most of them praised New Zealand’s administration, but criticism came from the Syrian and Soviet delegates on the point of whether the Samoans were ready for self-government. Two members of the United Nations mission which visited Western Samoa this year, Mr Leon Pignon (France) and Mr Enrique De Marchena (Dominican Republic), contributed to the debate. Mr Pignon said the remarkable growth in population indicated the vitality of the Samoans, whom he called “a proud, gifted and friendly people, devoid of any inferiority complex.” But he believed their economic and social organisation was bound to break up under the impact of modem influences.
