INCIDENT IN EAST ZONE
MR ADLAI STEVENSON HELD BY POLICE (Rec. 7 p.m.) BERLIN, July 11. East German police today held Mr Adlal Stevenson, the United States Democratic Party leader, for 20 minutes when he paid a visit to East Berlin. Mr Stevenson was spending two days in Berlin during a world tour. He was looking round the Soviet sector when East German police stopped him. Mr Stevenson and several companions had stopped their car near the remains of the former “Hitler bunker” at the Chancellery and walked up to it. When they returned to the car, an East German police car was blocking its way. According to Mr Stevenson’s secretary, the policemen apparently did not know Mr Stevenson. After 20 minutes’ wrangling, the police allowed Mr Stevenson to continue on his way. A United States High Commission spokesman said later than an East German policeman, with orders to shoot if anyone moved, pointed a pistol at Mr Stevenson throughout the incident.
Major Edward Lumpkin, Mr Stevenson’s escort officer, eventually persuaded the Russians to let the party leave if they surrendered the films from their cameras. ,
