RELIGIOUS BROADCASTS

Sir, —According to some historian, “For the first five centuries the doctrine of rebirth was a cardinal belief in the West. But at the Council of Constantinople, A.D. 551, it was considered incompatible” and was eliminated. Would M. G. Davies, writing of “reincarnation,” agree with the work of Professor Radakrishnan, and perhaps think also that serious general study, research, and thought might be stimulated by broadcasts dealing with origins and resemblances between the various branches of early religious manifestations and their modern results? The best of so many holding similarity, being pooled, could but lead to some understanding and fellowship among all who revere God. Emphasis upon difference or discrepancy might be replaced by realisation of long common search for light (even as plants seeking sunshine), development following faith held in a Creator immanent in His creation.—Yours, etc., SEEK AND FIND. July 11, 1953.

Sir.—l disagree with M. G. Davies and “Lead Kindly Light” concerning religious broadcasts. First, persons who are not interested in religion will not listen to religious broadcasts; and, second, to argue that God can be found in men’s hearts, or in listening to radio talks, is just simply dodging the issue. The only way to keep in touch with God is to worship Him. In the church men meet together, “to render thanks for the great benefits they have received at His hands, and to hear His most Holy word.” Finally, it is not fair to condemn the church, any church, and use that institution for baptism, confirmation, marriage and, finally, death.—Yours, RENDER UNTO.
