Members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Pensioners' Association were entertained recently by the South Brighton Country Women’s Institute drama group. The programme also included songs by Mrs each and Mr J. Spence (Dunedin), and vocal duets by Mesdames Chamberlain and Sawtell. It was decided at the July meeting of the Canterbury Housewives’ Union to apply for permission to collect signatures to a petition to Parliament expressing concern at the increased electricity charges. This will be presented at the same time as the petition dealing with the cost of living, which is at present waiting to be heard. Taxi drivers in Singapore are frightened of glancing at women passengers, according to a leading hire car operator. He said one woman threatened a law suit because a taxi driver glimpsed her in his mirror. Drivers are Malay, Indians and Chinese, and their passengers were considered more modest than in other countries. The point arose when a newspaper polled taxi drivers’ opinions on reports that American “cabbies” gave their passengers cups of coffee, flowers, aspirins and photographic souvenirs.
