HOCKEY

TRINITY MAINTAINS LEAD

DRAWN GAME WITH SYDENHAM

Wet, slippery grounds made good hockey impossible when the eleventh round of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competitions was played on Saturday. Players found it difficult to maintain a foothold, and the rough bumpy nature of the turf made good stick play impossible. Trinity drew with Sydenham 2-all in a scratchy game, and University beat Selwyn by 2 goals to 0. Old Boys had the better ball control and cohesion to beat Woolston, 1-0.

Following are the match points*of the senior grade teams:—Trinity Bi, University'7j, Sydenham 6, Woolston 6, High School Old Boys 6, Selwyn si,

UNIVERSITY v. SELWYN Had Selwyn been able to use the ball in front of the goal it would have run University much closer. University owed its 2-0 win to its defence tactics and good keeping of D. Goldsmith. On the attack the side always looked more formidable. Whenever it was in possession University made good use of the ball, and once its attacks were under way it kept the ball moving about. D. Adcock, in the centre, was always good, and J. Mann at inside right opened up play well. C. V. Walter covered a lot of ground and made a lot of openings, and E. Jackson was solid as usual. D. Goldsmith was on the top of his form and missed nothing, though once or twice he was outgeneralled. Selwyn lacked thrust and failed to get its attacks moving early enough. Consequently the defence had time to cover. When it did penetrate it sadly lacked forwards who could trap and push the ball in—three certain goals were thus missed. B. Blakely did a lot of good work at centre-half, and J. Reece also made a lot of openings from centreiorward.

University got its; first goal when Eggleton drove well from a penalty corner. The second came from a right attack when T. de Cleene sent over a good pass which Mann steered into goal. The umpires were Messrs J. Hocking and J. Hartigan. OLD BOYS v. WOOLSTON In a fast, open game, in spite of the heavy ground, Old Boys got home against Woolston by the only goal scored, although neitner side took full advantage of its chances. Old Boys had rather the better of the first spell, when R. Johannsen played splendidly to stop some hot ! snots. Woolston was going strongly at I times in the second sped, when it might | well have slipped through an occasional gap in the Ola Boys’ defence. In spite of occasional lapses, good attack met good defence, and both sides did attempt to play good if keen hockey. N. Hobson played splendidly at inside right, and his early and well-directed passes were always a threat. D. Sinclair on the left did enough to mark him as a promising young left wing. L. Hobson was very solid at left back, and L. Templeton as his partner held the defence together well.

R. Cummins and I. Prangnell played a large part in the Old Boys success by their defence against the Woolston right attack. The Old Boys forwards showed plenty of dash, but at times 'there was too much jamming. However, in the circle they were quick and active, with P. Blythe and I. Armstrong giving good leadership. Old Boys’ only goal came when N. Thomas ran deep and short-passed to R. Armstrong, who slipped a neat pass for I. Armstrong to score in an open goal. The umpires were Messrs W. Morris and J. Hartigan.

TRINITY v. SYDENHAM In a fast, open game, with both teams playing brilliant hockey. Trinity drew witn Sydenham, two goals each, on a muddy field. Trinity held a one goal advantage at half-time. Then Sydenham registered twice—one a penalty goal—and Trinity fought hard to equalise just before time. For Sydenham, Rhind saved some hot shots. B. Hall played soundly at left back and gave a good exhibition. M. Hall was on occasions too slow. The half-line combined well with Morris snowing up. Randle at left back was as consistent as usual, and found gaps repeatedly. M. Wall also did some fine work. The forwards showed great understanding. McAlister was frequently too slow, but support by Fergus and Cumberpatch closed the gap somewhat. Speedy was outstanding on the left wing, and Cummins on the right had little opportunity to show his worth. Trinity made the most of Sydenham’s errors, and taking advantage of loose passes, turned them to good advantage. Mitchell is a sound back, and his clearing hits were sure and well directed. Jones revels in the tight play, and is also sure with his passes. Thomas, a heady player, is fast accustoming himself to the right half position, and gave a sterling performance, ably supported by Hayward at centre. The forwards trapped the ball well, and their bustling tactics at times showed overeagerness. Robinson is a dashing player but too fast for the other forwards. Dickie and Allen proved themselves a good pair, and some combined passing movements deserved a better reward.

Trinity’s first goal came when Allen netted brilliantly from close range. Sydenham then gained a penalty goal when Trinity’s custodian, Ormsby, committed a breach. Sydenham added a second when Fergus collected near the back line and beat Ormsby from close range. Trinity attacked hotly to regain the advantage and Beecroft rounded off a brilliant movement by beating Rhind easily. The umpires were Messrs N. Hocking and B. W. Rogers.
