BRITISH OPEN TITLE

GOLF

Hogan Wins By Four Strokes P. THOMSON SECOND EQUAL

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, July 10. „ Hogan, who won the British open &”* championship at Carnoustie today, is the first player to hold both the American and British titles at the same time sll L ce Oene Sarazen in 1932. Finishing four strokes ahead of his nearest opponents, Hogan stood in the middle of the eighteenth green tonight, waving his cap and bowing to the crowd ?c 3 ~ u He said m a press interview that he did not intend to defend his title next year, “but don’t take that as final.” Australia’s Peter Thomson played great golf to finish in second place with three others.

Thomson was very despondent as he walked off the last green with his second 71 of the day. With a bit of luck on the greens he might have returned under 70 in both rounds. He has finished second in two successive British open tournaments.

A big gallery cheered Thomson’s effort. His aggregate was 286 (72, 72, 71, 71)—a splendid performance on a difficult course. Thomson shared second place with the Welshman, Dai Rees, the American amateur, F. Stranahan, and A. Cerda (Argentina). But Hogan (73. 71, 70, 68—282) was the shining star. By today he had mastered the strange greens, the unfamiliar terrain, the smaller British ball, and the "blind” shots for which Carnoustie is noted. Bobby Locke, last year’s winner, could not do better today than 74 and 72, and finished well down the list with an aggregate of 291. , Argentina’s powerful R. de Vlcenzo, always among the leaders, was sixth. Scotland’s Eric Brown slipped today and a final 77 put Faulkner out of the running. Ovation from Crowd The crowd showed its appreciation of Hogan’s performance. As he walked up to receive the cup, thousands cheered him every inch of the way. There was drama at every green as the competitors moved slowly over the 7200 yard course, and every putt began to count with increasing importance as the contest reached its climax. Hogan had to do a 71 in the final round to win, but it soon became evident that he would reach his target easily. Opening with four perfect fours", he holed a chip out of a grass hazard for three at the 288 yard fifth. He showed his astonishing reserve of strength when he hit two tremendous woods to the verge of the 567 yards sixth and was down in an approach, and single putt for a four. He did not falter but scored par figures to stand two under four’s for 12 holes after turning in 34. Then he struck his victory blow. A fine tee shot and a 10ft putt for a two at the short thirteenth made his score four under fours. After this play became a mere formality and he eased in for a home run of 34 and a record 68.
