SALE OF LINER MARIPOSA

WASHINGTON, July 9. The Maritime Administrator (Mr Louis Rothschild) has granted permission to the Matson Navigation Company to sell the liner Mariposa (18,150 tons) to a Panamanian company. Mr Rothschild said he took action after being informed that the Matson Company was faced with the possibility of scrapping the liner rather than bear the cost of reconverting her fully to luxury passenger status. The Mariposa and the Monterey were requisitioned by the Government at the outbreak of the Second World War and converted to troop carriers. After the war they were returned to the Oceanic Steamship Company, a subsidiary of the Matson Company. Reconversion to passenger liners was begun, but was stopped because of high costs. The Mariposa has been idle for nearly eight years.
