AMALGAMATION DATE

FINANCIAL DISCUSSIONS NOT COMPLETED

No decision on financial questions involved in the taking into the city of Christchurch of areas in the Waimairi and Heathcote counties on a date earlier than April 1 next was reached at a conference of executive officers of the local bodies yesterday. The conference was held at the City Council Chambers. It lasted for three hours and a half, and was adjourned to allow the counties to submit more information on the effect of their finances of amalgamation taking effect, as proposed by the City Council, on October 1.

The officers will report to the Waimairi County Council at its meeting next Thursday and to the Heathcote County Council on July 31. Both councils have passed resolutions suggesting April 1 as the date for the amalgamation with the city of ridings and parts of ridings designated in the scheme, yet to be finally approved, of the Local Government Commission.
