The Director of Education (Mr C. E. Beeby) left Wellington by air yesterday on his way to Paris to visit UNESCO headquarters and attend a six-man committee meeting which will advise UNESCO on its future educational programme. Mr Beeby will also represent New Zealand at a special general conference of UNESCO officials from July 1 to July 5.—(P.A.)

Sir Ernest Andrews and Messrs W. S. Mac Gibbon, P. H. Wood, and J. N. Clarke, were reappointed to the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council at the annual meeting of the council yesterday.

Mr John Stewart, who has given 15 years’ service to Te W’ai Pounamu College, has resigned from the position of chairman of the board of governors. His successor is Mr G. Oakleigh Greenwood. Mr Stewart’s resignation was accepted with regret at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. It was decided to hold a meeting of supporters and friends of the college shortly to pay tribute to Mr Stewart’s service.

Mr B. D. Foley has been appointed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board as assistant clerk of works at the new Cashmere Hospital. Mr E. R. C. Gilmour, who has been Mayor of New Plymouth for 21 years, has decided to seek re-election.—(P.A.)

Dr. W. G. Scannell has been appointed a member of the honorary consulting staff of the Christchtirch Hospital.

Messrs S. G. Farquhar, I. H. Barker (organiser), and A. E. G. Lyttle (provincial secretary) were appointed as additional delegates to attend the Dominion conference of Federated Farmers at a meeting of the Canterbury executive yesterday. The conference is to be held in Wellington from July 15 to July 17. Dr. A. D. Muir has been appointed assistant dermatologist on the visiting staff of the Christchurch Hospital, and Dr. L. H. V. Longmore as assistant dermatologist for part-time duties at the outpatients’ department.

Mr W. P. Ussher was appointed secretary of the Canterbury Youth Farm Advisory Council to succeed Mr G. D. Innes, at the council’s annual meeting yesterday. Mr Innes is to leave on promotion for Wellington.
