STORE LAMBS IN GOOD DEMAND

Fat Wethers Dearer; Ewes Cheaper FAT CATTLE UP SLIGHTLY Store wether lambs continued to sell well at the Addington stock market yesterday, but ewe lambs were inclined to be easier. Ewes predominated in the adult section and they were dearer. Competition for fat ewes was weak and all but the best were 3s to 4s easier. Fat wethers on the other hand were dearer by 4s to ss. There were some slight increases in values in the fat cattle section and all over the. market was slightly firmer. STORE SHEEP The store lamb yarding totalled 1578, including 540 ewe lambs, compared with 1380 last week. Because of the generally favourable feed position in Canterbury, there was again an excellent market for wether lambs, which made values fully up to late rates. A good proportion of the wether lamb entry sold at more than 50s a head. There were only a few pens of ewe lambs, and these did not seem to be so keenly sought as at recent sales. Values for this type were back 2s or 3s on late rates. For the time of the year the entry was of good quality.

Best wether lambs made from 53s to 58s 6d, good 48s to 525, medium 40s to 475, and others down to 30s. Best ewe lambs made to 745, and other pens made from 40s to 60s. Ninety wether lambs from E. S. W. Whiting (Weedons) sold at 58s 6d, and other leading sales were made on behalf of N. B. Carney (Methven), 74 at 575; J. A. Callaghan (Fendalton), 71 at 565; G. M. Dixon (East Eyreton), 95 at 565; C. S. Donald (Belfast), 10 at 55s 6d; and D. R. Barlass (Mount Hutt), 40 at 55s 6d. C. S. Donald (Belfast) also sold 317 halfbred ewe lambs at 70s to 745.

The adult sheep entry totalled 1006, against 974 last week. Ewes of varying quality made up the bulk of the entry, and on the whole they met a better sale and were 2s to 3s dearer. An outstanding line of 82 big, well-woolled fiveyear Romney ewes from Geraldine made 83s a head. Tiiere were three Ryeland rams with the line, and they had been with them since April 10. Forty-five twoshear ewes from South Canterbury realised 635, and 60 Romney-Corriedale ewes from L. W. Savage (Waiau) 665. Both lines had been mated with Southdown rams early in April. A line of 71 twotooth ewes and wethers from P. Smythe (Riccarton) sold at 645, and a small pen of two and four-tooth wethers from J. W. Graham and Son (Tai Tapu) sold at 57s 6d, and 69 six and eight-tooth wethers from Hundalee realised 42s 6d. FAT LAMBS The yarding of fat lambs was of very mixed quality, but all classes met a sound demand from butchers and the freezing trade. The entry totalled 1723, compared with 1439 at the previous sale. Prices were steady on values ruling last week for similar quality lambs, and the majority sold from 57s to 67s Id. The top price was 94s Id for a single lamb from T. R. Winter (Swannanoa), and there were several sales from 80s to Values were:—Heaviest lambs, to 94s Id; good, 70s Id to 79s Id; medium, 65s Id to 69s Id; light, 54s Id |o 64s Id. DAIRY CATTLE In the dairy cattle section there was an entry of about 50 head. There was a fair showing of good cows and heifers close to profit, and for these the demand was fully up to late rates, but the small and inferior sorts did not sell quite so Seven big-framed Jersey-Friesian cross cows, due in the spring, made from £26 to £35, averaging £2B 10s each, and seven cows recently calved made from £23 to

£5l, averaging £36 7s. Best second, third and fourth calvers made from £3B to £42, with one sale at £5l, medium £33 to £3B, and others down to £2l. Best heifers realised from £42 to £47, with one to £5l, medium £2B to £39, with small and backward down to £lB 10s. STORE CATTLE The yarding of store cattle was small, and consisted mainly of mixed aged and nondescript cattle. Only eight pens of station calves were forward, and these sold well. A feature of the entry was a line of 25 Hereford-Shorthorn cross steer calves, and 18 heifer calves of similar breeding from Jacksons, Westland. Although these calves were not as large as some which have been sold at Addington during the autumn, they showed very good breeding. The steers made the high price of £2l 6s, and the heifers made £l9 10s. Other lines included a pen of 15 Aberdeen Angus cross steer calves from Parnassus, which made £2l 8s 6d. Nineteen Hereford steer calves from the same source made £2O 8s 6d. Another line of 26 Hereford steer and heifer calves made from £l9 Is to £l9 3s 6d. A pen of nine 18-months-old steers made £29 18s 6d, and six adult Shorthorn steers made £2B 3s 6d. VEALERS The veal yarding was of average size and was about sufficient for requirements. Quality was generally good. There was keen competition at the opening of the market, but towards the end, when a few late entries arrived, there was an easing in interest. ' Prime large runners made to £25 18s 6d. medium £l5 6s to £l9 Ils, and backward down to £lO 16s. Prime large suckers fetched to £l9 3s 6d, medium £l2 Is to £l5 13s 6d, large calves £8 Is to £ll Ils, medium £5 6s to £7 18s 6d, and small and rough down to 50s. FAT PIGS The entrv in the porker section was similar in size to that of last week, and consisted mainly of good quality sorts. Competition was again keen and all classes sold well. In the chopper section the entry was a little larger, and although the sale was a good one, values were £1 to 30s easier than last week. 1 The entry of baconers was very small, and- > all classes met spirited competition at values 3s to 5s in advance of last week. Values were:— Light porkers, £5 12s 6d to £5 19s 6d. > Medium porkers, £6 2s 6d to £6 16s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 2s 6d to £7 17s 6d. Choppers, £9 18s 6d to £l7 18s 6d. Light baconers, £8 9s 6d to £9 12s 6d. ' Medium, £9 14s 6d to £lO 18s 6d. : Heavy baconers, £ll 4s 6d to £l2 8s 6d. Average price per lb, 18d to 19d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was very much larger, being practically twice as large as last week, with a good selection of i all classes. The attendance of buyers was . again a large one, and competition was keen throughout, and last week’s in- ' creased rates were fully maintained. The _ advertised entry of sows in pig did not come to hand. ; Values were:— ? Small weaners, 45s to 555. 1 Best weaners, 58s to 665. 3 Slips, 68s to 78s. 5 Small stores, 80s to 88s. Medium stores, 90s to 100 s. Large stores, 105 s to 112 s. j BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 24. 5 The feature of today’s Burnside sale s I was the high values secured for all classes

of store cattle. All pens were taken up and the attendance of buyers and interested members of the public was the largest at the yards for some time. One line of well-bred steers from the Lakes district attracted particular attention, and was readily disposed of at auction at increased values over late sales. Other lines sold correspondingly well. In the fat cattle section the number penned was 385 head. The offering again included a number of consignments of good quality ox with the usual number of unfinished and plain sorts. Bidding was not as brisk as the previous week and, generally, prices were easier by 20s to 30s a head on the heavier weight cattle, while prime light-weights did not show much difference from last week. The sale was a fluctuating one throughout and difficult to follow. Cows and heifers sold fairly well, also at slightly reduced rates. In the fat sheep section, the offering was decidedly larger than for the previous two weeks, about 2400 being penned. With the larger number to hand, the high values ruling last week were not in evidence, although good prices were secured. Generally prices were easier by 7s to 8s a head for both ewes and wethers.
