BANKRUPT MEETS CREDITORS

OFFER OF ORDER ON WAGES ACCEPTED

Maurice Meikle, also known as Paul George Maurice, a labourer, who was adjudged bankrupt on May 27, 1953, was examined by the Official Assignee (Mr G. W. Brown) at a meeting of his creditors yesterday. At Meikle’s offer an order for £8 10s a month is to be made on his wages until some satisfactory amount, to be determined later, is paid in.

Mr Brown said that Meikle’s statement of affairs showed unsecured creditors at £194 9s 6d, secured creditors at £l5 13s 6d, total assets at £3O, and the deficiency at £142 16s. In a statement requesting an adjournment of the meeting from June 10 to June 24, Meikle said that his wife was in hospital and he had to take time off work to Ibok after his three children. Because of past misdemenaours he was ‘‘having an awful struggle” and had been driven from job to job. He would try to pay his creditors £2 a week out of his wage Of £9 a week.

Describing the circumstances leading to his bankruptcy, Meikle said that he had hired a truck to make money carting manure and soil. He had tried to save enough each week to pay one account at a time, but had found that impossible because of victimisation. For that reason he had changed his name in August, 1951, and had been moving from job to job. He had been at Annat, Cheviot, Dunsandel, Hororata, Eiffelton and Oamaru. While at Annat he had entered into a partnership to hawk fruit and vegetables to Otira and the West Coast, said Meikle when examined by Mr Brown. The partnership had come to nothing. / Meikle said that he was now earning £ll a week as a tractor driver, plus accommodation and most of his keep. His wife drew £8 10s a month child allowance, which she was prepared to sign over to pay debts. ‘‘l do not think you can sign over the child allowance, but an order can be made for £8 10s on your wages,” said Mr Brown.
