Miss E. Cardale, who is president of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children, was unable to take the chair at the annual meeting of the society yesterday, as she is at present in hospital. On the motion of Miss Mabel Howard, M.P., a letter of sympathy was sent to Miss Cardale and to Mrs V. J. Drake, a member of the committee, who was also absent from the meeting because of illhealth. Miss Moreland, a visitor to Christchurch from Sussex, England, is the guest of Mrs R. MacDougall, Rossall street. Three members of the Eiffelton Country Girls’ Club are attending the conference of Country Girls’ Clubs in Dunedin this week. They are Mrs J. Hare (president), who is a delegate, Miss J. McQuilkm, a member of th? Dominion executive, and Miss B. Taylor. Mrs M. Hodgkinson, director-general of Red Cross voluntary aids, and Dr. Janet Brown, medical officer of the Wellington centre, have returned to Wellington after visiting the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society,

Mrs C. C. Porter presided at the June meeting of the Papanui branch of the League of Mothers when an interesting talk was given by Miss E. R. McCullum on the work of the Red Cross Society. A solo was sung by Mrs J, Toshash and the branch choir sang choruses.

The monthly meeting of the Durham Street Methodist Missionary Auxiliary took the form of an afternoon social. The programme, arranged by Mrs W. E. Olds, consisted of songs sung by Mrs R. E. Voller and Miss Elaine Hudson, and elocutionary items given by Mrs J. H. Woolley. Mrs Olds played piano solos and also accompanied the Soloists. An interesting talk was given by Sister Betty Yearbury on her work as a deaconess among the Maori people in South Taranaki. The president (Mrs I. K. Huntington) thanked Ml those who had contributed towards the success of the afternoon. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs J. H. Mortlock in the death of her sister.

Mrs C. E. Anderson presided at the monthly' meeting of the Central Townswomen’s Guild and welcomed eight new members. Circle reports were read by Mrs Hodge (arts and crafts), Mrs Cairns Bell (singing), Mrs Horne (civic), Mrs Waters (bridge), Mrs Speddlng (drama), Mrs Timms (gardening), Mrs Hammond (hospital visitor), and Mrs Buckley (cradle roll).
