N.Z. MARRIAGE IN KURE

K FORCE SERGEANT WEDS JAPANESE (N.Z. Army Information Service) . _ _ . KURE, June 20. A New Zealand K Force soldier married a Japanese admiral’s daughter at Kure today. He was Sergeant G. S. Sutherland, of Bulls, and his bride was Miss Susan Akiko Ota.

Engaged last November, the couple had been eagerly awaiting official approval of their marriage from New Zealand. This arrived last week and the wedding took place at the Protestant Church at Cassels Camp, Kure. A large crowd of New Zealanders and Japanese friends attended. Mrs Sutherland, who has been a clerk at the Commonwealth Forces’ Club in Kure since 1948. is 23 years of age and sft 2in in height. Her father, Admiral Minoru Ota. was killed at Okinawa during World War 11.

Sergeant Sutherland, a dairy machinery salesman in Bulls in civil life, said that he and his wife intended to return there as soon as possible. One other K Force soldier who returned to New Zealand some months ago married a Japanese girl. He married without telling the Army his intentions and the existence of the marriage was unknown until the soldier applied for permission for his wife to enter New Zealand.
