WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Ladbrooki. —Mrs J. Ware presided at the monthly meeting of the Ladbrooks Country Women’s Institute. Mrs P. Pickering gave her report on the annual federation meeting in Christchurch. Mrs Pickering was congratulated on being awarded a Good Service badge. A presentation was made to Mrs G. Alexander, who was leaving the district. Two rosetrees, presented for competition by Mrs A. Coleman, were won by Mrs H. Meyer. Results; of competitions were:—large bloom: Mrs Stone 1. Mrs P. Pickering 2. Small bloom: Mrs Pickering 1, Mrs Stone 2. Cluster: Mrs Pickering 1. Mrs Stone 2. Balmoral.—Coronation celebrations were held by the Balmoral Women’s Institute at the end of the June meeting. Songs, recitations, piano solos, readings, games and talks on London crowds and parks were contributed. It was decided to sponsor the two European children under the save the children fund again for another year. Competition winners were as follows:—cooking: Victoria cake: Mrs Forrester 1. Hawarden.-*Mrs Kellock presided at the June* meeting of the Hawarden Country Women’s Institute. Correspondence dealt with included invitations to neighbouring ■institutes’ twenty-first birthday parties; acknowledgements of sympathy, flowers, and parcels; a health education circular, and notice of an adult education homecraft school to be held In July. Members were asked to bring scraps of material to be sent to Malaya. Mrs KelJaway demonstrated a twisted wool cord, and Mrs Blunden demonstrated the making of wool eiderdowns from wool taken straight, from a sheepskin. Competitions resulted:—large bloom: Mrs Avery 1. Brooker presided at the June meeting of the Medbury Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Philpott gave a report on the recent federation meeting. Arrangements were completed for the twenty-first birthday party to be held on June 23. Competitions resulted:—large bloom: Mrs Philpott 1, Mrs H. H. Brooker 2. Small bloom: Mrs F. Busch 1, Mrs D. brought many entries, all to be sent to the Karitane baby hospital. Members gave pieces of material to b® sent to Malaya. Items were given by Mesdames Pipe, H. Hopkins, Burnip, Pearce and Isle. The Peaks.—Mrs L. Hassall presided at the June meeting of The Peaks Country Women’s Institute. There was a good attendance, including two visitors. The hostesses were Mrs J. J. FLAKE PUDDING NEEDS NO EGGS Eggs are scarce and dear as well, but here’s a-recipe that saves both eggs and money. Simple, too, and so delicious; 1 pint milk, 3oz flaked -rice, loz sugar, J teaspoon “Cathedral Brand” Essence of Vanilla. Boil milk and sugar together, put rice into piedish, pour over the milk. Stir in “Cathedral Brand” Essence of Vanilla and bake in moderate oven for 20 minutes. Advt.
