NEW TRAFFIC DISTRICT

AREAS CUT TO GIVE BETTER CONTROL

As a move to reduce the accident rate; traffic districts of the Transport Department have been reduced in size, allowing more intensive supervision. The Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast district, formerly controlled from Christchurch by the Chief Traffic Officer (Mr E. Wilson), has been divided in two, Canterbury remaining yndcr Mr Wilson and Nelson, Marlborough, and the West Coast being controlled by Mr A. I. Garriock, formerly senior traffic officer for Nelson city, who will be based in Nelson. > Both districts will be administered from the department’s office in Christchurch.

Departmental officials and senior traffic officers discussed the new divisions at a conference in Wellington on Thursday and Friday of last week.

The change had been found necessary because of the, increase in traffic, but there would be no increase in the number on the staff, said the District Officer of the Department in Christchurch (Mr T. D. Clifford) yesterday. The object of the change was to ensure that the department could fnake the best use of the present staff and patrol mileage.
