R.A.S.C. WEEK IN KOREA

Driving And Shooting Competitions (N.Z. Army Information Service) KOREA, June 19. New Zealanders had conspicuous success in the inter-unit driving and shooting competitions conducted by the Ist Commonwealth Divisional column of the Royal Army Service Corps in “R.A.S.C. Week” in Korea. The highlight of the week was a church parade and a march past before Major-General M. A. R. West, commander of the division. Also present was Brigadier R. S. Park, the Commander of K Force, who earlier addressed a parade of the New Zealand No. 10 Motor Transport Company. Taking part in the week’s activities were New Zealanders, Canadians, British and Indians. New Zealand scored in the truck driving competition, with Lance-Cor-poral P. J. Brownlie (Wairoa), of No. 10 Company taking first place from 18 other contestants. Driver P. F. Stafford (Omakau, Central Otago) was third equal.

In the team event based on averages, New Zealand’s Divisional Headquarters Transport Platoon was first. New Zealanders also performed well in reliability trials for jeeps, In a competition against 18 other drivers I. McKeown (Clinton, South Otago) was placed third. Eight teams competed in a shooting competition which embraced rifle, Bren, light machine-gun, Sten and pistol and the New Zealanders again scored well. No. 10 Company came second to a British company in the overall aggregate for the corps championship. In the rifle shooting the highest individual score was obtained by Driver C. A. Morton (Wharanui, Marlborough). The team event was won by a Canadian company with New Zealand’s No. 10 Company and the Divisional Headquarters Transport Platoon second and third.

No. 10 Company was also second in the Sten shooting. In the light machine-gun event the New Zealand company was third, and in the pisto 1 shooting fourth.
