NEW PARK NAMED ELIZABETH
The official designation of Elizabeth Park was given by the City Council last evening, on the recommendation of the reserves committee, to the reserve recently acquired from Mr J. L. Neale and situated along Dyer’s Pass road between the Sign of the Takahe and Victoria Park. The name was suggested by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) at the Coronation tree planting ceremony on June 6. Reserves Loan Works.— The Plynlimon road reserve, an old gravel pit filled with city rubbish, has been levelled and graded, and will be sown down in lawn seed in the spring. Some 84 trees have been planted on the boundary. Further levelling is being carried out in the new sports area in Rawhiti Domain.
Radley Street Playgrounds—A subsidy of £lOO will oe paid by the council as a subsidy on the contribution of £2OO by the McCombs Memorial Trust Committee towards the cost of equipment for the Radley street playground. A suitable plaque will be erected recording that the money was subscribed for a memorial'to the late Mr and Mrs J. McCombs. Riccarton Bush Levy.— The Riccarton bush levy on the City Council, as also on the Waimairi, Heathcote and Paparua county councils and the Riccarton Borough Council, will be on the basis of l/135th of a penny in the £ of rateable capital value. Protection of Grass Plot.— -The building of a small kerbing to mark the roadway and the lawn at the Mount Pleasant war memorial community centre was approved, the cost being about £l5O. The centre had reported damage caused by motorists to the grass plot. The cost of the kerbing will be provided out of the sum of £lOOO intact in the loan towards the cost of the centre.
Permanent Shrub Display.— The display of shrubs outside the council building in Manchester street will be retained as a permanent feature, the number and placing being left to the Director of Reserves.
Monck’s Spur Road.— The use of the name of Tauhinu avenue from the top of the steps on Monck’s Spur right through to the Mount Pleasant road will be discontinued and the name Monck’s Spur road used. New Streets Named.— The names of Roslyn avenue and Glenfield crescent have been given to two new streets in the Philpotts road subdivision, north of Dudley creek, of the Paramount Building Company. Roslyn avenue is the continuation of a new street off Crozier’s road and Glenfield crescent is a crescent shaped street with two entrances off Philpotts road. Because of possible confusion with Asmole street, Woolston, the company has been asked to suggest a name other than Ashmore street for the street between the northern and southern parts of Glenfield crescent.
Library Reservation Fee*—The reservation fee for books at the Canterbury Public Library was increased from Id to 3d as from July 1. Pedestrian Crossing.— A. pedestrian crossing over-Woodham road at the eastern entrance to the North Linwood School was authorised. The headmaster was given authority to institute a school patrol.
Temeporary Bridging.-—The erection of a temporary bridge of the type recently used at Dallington will be required when other bridges are built in the future, the works committee reported. “Some sites may require the use of two bridges to take the two lanes of traffic, said the report “In view of this, consideration may be given to the purchase of some bridging equipmenet of this type.” Although the Bailey type of work was strange to the men at Dallington, they “managed particularly well,” reported the committee and the bridge, which has a span of 90 feet and will carry a gross load of 10 tons, was erected in good time.
