KING’S CUP AIR RACE

TEST PILOT WINS IN CHIPMUNK (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON. June! 20. Mr Pat Fillingham, 39-year-old chief production test pilot-for de Havinand, won the King’s Clip afr race at Southend, Essex, today. He aveijaged 140 miles an hour in a De HavilUmd Chipmunk. A A crowd of 10,000 saw a mid-air collision between two Percival Proctors during an earlier qualifying race to decide the 12 competitors for the King s Cup. One plane crashed and burned, killing the pilot. John Crowther, a 47-year-old hotel manager. The other plane limped round the course to finish last in the race. ' Fillingham won the 1902 British air racihg championship. Beside him was his wife Edna, who “went along just for a joy-ride.” ■ W Bowles, in a Miles Messenger, finished second with an average speed of 133 miles an hour, followed by D.
