SLIPS ON RAILWAY NEAR KAIKOURA
RESULT OF HEAVY RAINFALL
Heavy rain in the Kaikoura and east coast area on Saturday night brought down slips on parts of the South Island mam trunk railway. A total of 1 7in fell during the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday, lin of it between 9 p.m. and' The lar , gest . sh P ,s just beyond the Blue Duck, which is about 10 miles by rail from Kaikoura. Two bulldozers and a works train were working on the slip last night find it was expected tobe clear in time for the goods train scheduled to leave Kaikoura at 2.50 a.m. today. Minor slips were reported at Rakautara and Kekerangu. During the last 10 days of intermittent rain and drizzle, a total of 4 14in of rain has fallen at Kaikoura. The Seaward Kaikoura range is heavily coated with snow down to 3500 ft level
