Commander (S.) R. A. J. Owen, R.N., who has been appointed Third Naval Member and Member for Supply on the New Zealand Naval Board with the rank of acting-captain, will arrive in New Zealand next month with his wife and three children.

Two sixth-form pupils of Epsom Girls* Grammar School, 17-year-old Elizabeth Porritt and 16-year-dld Josie Schriffer. have won American Field Service Scholarships. Awarded to students from many countries, the scholarships enable holders to study in the United States for a year and to tour at the end of their schooling. The Auckland girls will leave by air for America on August 25. A niece of Sir Arthur Porritt, famous New Zealand athlete and now Surgeon to the Queen, Elizabeth Porritt will meet her uncle in Vancouver next year for the Empire Games. Three winners of art scholarships will soon leave New Zealand for England. They are Roy Cowan, who will be accompanied by his artist wife, Juliet Peter, T. Coomber, and Mervyn Taylor.

Sponsors of children* under the Save the Children Fund are now having the satisfaction of hearing that the children they have helped for the last few years are either restored to health or brought to the stage where they can begin to help themselves. One girl, who was left an orphan and was destitute, has after four years’ help from a Christchurch sponsor qualified as a nurse. She writes that she would like to come to New Zealand and nurse here and in some small way try to repay what has been done for her.

At the June meeting, members of the Linwood Townswomen’s Guild were entertained by their drama circle. Three new members—Mesdames Beale.
