Mr Ross’ statement followed the imposition of a duty of 20 per ce .™ on ™ported steel butt hinges. The statement is full of faults," says the federation. “Contrary to the allegation that hinges will cost more in New Zealand Because of the duty now granted, evidence before the Board °f Trade showed that hinges made here can be sold as cheaply as imported ones.” J The Board of Trade considered that the local factory is producing a good quality article for a reasonable price, and the federation emphasises that New Zealand will retain a valuable industry and have extra sterling exchange to buy commodities New Zealand cannot make herself.
