TRINITY OUTPLAYED BY SYDENHAM SELWYN DRAWS WITH HAREWOOD Trinity suffered its second defeat of the season in the Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior competition on Saturday, Sydenham outplaying it to win 2-0. In a fast, interesting game at Williamson Park, Selwyn and Harewood drew, 3-3. In the second. game at Williamson Park, Woolston outplayed Teachers’ College to win 2-0. University beat Technical, 3-2, and High School Old Boys beat West Old Boys, 2-1. I , r The results leave Trinity at the top of the competition, half a point ahead of Selwyn, which is a point ahead of Sydenham, Technical and University. Teachers’ CdUege, High School Old Boys, and Woolston are half a point behind those three. At the end of the next round of matches the six leading teams are considered senior A grade, and the remaining four senior A reserve. The first six will play a round of five games to decide the championship. At present the points place Trinity, Selwyn, Sydenham, Technical, and University in the leading six, but three teams —Woolston, High School Old Boys, and Teachers’ Collegeare level for the sixth place which, unless points are altered, will be decided on goal averages. At present Woolston has a one goal advantage. Next Saturday, in the last round of the first series, Teachers’ College will play High School Old Boys and Woolston will meet West Old Bovs. Woolston should win, but the result of the Old Boys-Teachers’ College match is open.

SYDENHAM V. TRINITY Sydenham’s better forwards enabled it to beat Trinity in a hard game by 2 goals to 0. Sydenham showed more enterprise, organised its attack, and made better use of its chances. The game in tha first Spell was hockey at its best. Sydenham’s accurate passing and cohesion gave it the advantage territorially, and except for occasional lapses when the wings hit too hard across the goal-mouth, the team worked together well. Sydenham’s diversified attack had Trinity on the run throughout, and on few occasions did the latter reach the

scoring area. From one movement, however, every forward attempted to score within a few seconds, and Rhind countered shots from every possible angle. Conditions suited Sydenham admirably, and but for dogged defence by Mitchell and Jones, the score would have been higher. In the second spell Mitchell blocked right-wing attacks repeatedly, and Sydenham added only one goal. Trinity’s attempts at goal shooting were poor, and half-heartedness lost many

chances. Rhind came through the day with credit. B. Hall played soundly at right back and was ably supported by M. Hall. R. Randle played his usual shrewd game at left wing, and, his passes showed good judgment. W. Morris was sound at right half, but the centre half, M. Wall, seemed occasionally uncertain. Speedy played well at left wing, and his back-handed passes

were well timed. Cumberpatch played ar astute, if sometimes impulsive, game at inside left, and scored a fine goal. McAlister made some brilliant solo runs, and with Cummins, opened up the game frequently. The weakest link in Trinity appeared in the half line, which was no match for its opponents. A heavier burden thus fell oh Mitchell and Jones, who shouldered the responsibility well. Both Thomas and Hayward have shown to better advantage, and Thomas especially seemed to lack his usual steadiness. Robinson proved a dashing inside left, and Dickie and Allen combined well in several passing bouts. The Trinity attack lacked forcefulness and penetration, but the game tfas spectacular and interesting. Goals for Sydenham were scored by McAlister and Cumberpatch. . Umpires: Messrs K. Mortimer and W. Grammer. WOOLSTON v. TEACHERS’ COLLEGE Woolston played faster and brighter hockey to beat Teachers’ College by 2 goals to 0. Woolston completely rearranged its team, J. Abrams going to centre half and playing outstandingly well. His trapping and passtag were firstclass, and Wb kept well on the ball and broke up the opposing raids. R. Lapworth, who moved to centre forward, was overshadowed by N. Hobson, who played brilliantly at right inside, and with T. Crossen made up a strong right attack. In the backs, L. Templeton and L. Hobson proved equal to all attacks, Templeton especially placing his clearing shots College made the mistake of failing to. vary the free hits, which were taken weakly and were badly placed. At times, when the attack had reached Woolston’s twenty-five, the free hits were hit over the back line. Rendle, at back, Was not as safe as usual, and was inclined to get out of position. The halves, R. Kerr, P. Davies, .and R. Gibson played well and gave the forwards a good share of the ball. Lack of cohesion in the forwards was very noticeable, and there was an absence of method. . Goals were scored for Woolston by R. i Lapworth and N. Hobson. I Umpires: Messrs A. Ostler and N. Hockipg. OLD BOYS v. WEST OLD BOYS West Old Boys continued to show the improvement of previous weeks when they made Old Boys fight to win, 2-1, in a game that had little constructive hockey. West Old Boys owed their comparative success to their ability to move the ball about and their tenacity in tackling and covering. Old Boys just aid not finish the many good moves they initiated, except on one occasion when I. Armstrong completed a copybook movement that went from left half to inside right, to the wing, and back to Armstrong, who made no error after the defence had been Well broken; but there was not enough of this type of hockey to lift the game above mediocrity. For the winners. P. Hanna, in the halves, and I. Prangnell, in the backs, played well. G. Sandford showed up with penetrating runs for West Old Boys, and K. Elliott played soundly on defence. „ , Old Boys scored their first goal when P. Blyth won a penalty bully, and Armstrong scored late in the second spell. Sandiord scored for West Old Boys. Umpires: Messrs C. V. Walter and E. Jackson..

UNIVERSITY v. TECHNICAL Control beat pace and vigour when University met Technical. University won 3-2. University, in face of much bustling by Technical, held to the pattern of keeping control and using the ball to the best advantage. This gave it enough edge to win by the odd goal, but any of Technical’s rushes late in the game might have given it a score. C. V. Walter was at inside left in a rearranged University team, and again he showed how a player skilled in the basic principles of the game can be adequate in any position. More young players could emulate him. J. Mann made a useful centre-half, and E. Jackson was a solid ba Les Lloyd did well at left half for Technical. He is a solid defender, and is, as well, a fine constructive player. M. Elliott was a solid back, and M. McKinnon showed splendid form on the left wing. University took an early lead when T. de Cleene came in fast to snap up a chance. Dale evened the score when he won a penalty bully against Goldsmith. D. Adcock drove strongly from a penalty comer Co make the score 2-1. After half-time 4he game was even, but'late in the-spell Eggleton sent in a narrow angle shot and Walter moved in to push into an open goal when the keeper halfstopped the ball. Technical set a «enes of fast raids, from one of which McKinnon scored a typical left-wing goal. Umpires: Messrs C. Gutry and C. AvRogers.

SELWYN v. HAREWOOD -The game between Selwyn and Harewood was always interesting, and although the standard of play was not brilliant, the issue was in doubt until the final whistle. Selwyn, the more experienced team, played clever hockey at times and relied on short, fast passes. In the forwards, J. Reece stood out for his clever stick play and ball control. He was well fed by G. Biltcliff, who abandoned his usual type of play to keep Reece well supplied. Herron proved his worth as an opportunist when he followed in smartly to score an almost impossible goal. S. Gracie played at centre half in place of B. Blakeley, who was injured the previous Saturday. Gracie played up to his best form, and with J. Donkin and A. McOscar made up a valuable half-line. M. Clements was a sound and solid back on defence. Harewood played an improved and promises to be outstanding in a year or two. In the forwards, M. Wallan, P. Clements and C. Currie work well together. Wallan is a clever stick player who keeps well on the ball. M. Murray was the pick of the halves, who played a good defensive game. M. Pauli was sound at left back and placed his clearing shots with good judgment. Goals were scored for Selwyn by Herron (2) and Reece, and for Harewood by Clements (2) and Wallan. Umpires: Messrs A. Ostler and N. Hocking. LOWER GRADES Senior Reserve.—Sydenham 3, West Old Boys 0; New Brighton 2, Woolston 0; Selwyn 6, Redcliffs 4.
