COKE ELEVATOR COMPLETED

288 FT STRUCTURE AT GAS WORKS

With the installation of the last span, of 45 feet, the Christchurch Gas Company’s 288-foot coke elevator was completed on Saturday morning. The elevator will carry up to 70 tons of coke an hour from the coke screening plant to the No. 2 water gas plant. The elevator is essential to the oper* ation of the water gas plant, wnich will be completed soon. The water gas plant will minimise the company’s dependence on coal supplies, and will enable the company to maintain the supply of gas to its, consumers during an emergency. The estimated output of the new plant, together with that of the No. 1 water gas plant, totals 80 per cent, of the company’s peak mid-winter demand.
