VICTORIA STATE RAILWAYS
(Rec. 11 pjn.) MELBOURNE, June 12. A large number of communists in key positions in the Victorian railways were working to sabotage efforts to improve the system, the Minister of Transport (Mr . Coleman) said today. He said this was proved in a secret report received by the Government. The report by the railways investigators and the Commonwealth Security Service was “alarming,” said Mr Coleman. There was no doubt that the bad financial position of the railways was due in no small way to the communists’ subversive activities. Investigations showed that communism appeared more frequently in the workshops than in other sections of the railways. The Newport railway workshops was an “open forum” for communist agitators, who in every lunch-hour spread dissatisfaction, Communist cells had been discovered at Ballarat, Bendigo and Donald. Mr Coleman said supervision would be intensified to ensure that disruptionists could not use the Railway Department’s time to do their trouble-making.
