CROSSCOUNTRY RUNNING

RACES AT HALSWELL TODAY Greater entries have again been received for the annual Halswell cross-country races this afternoon. Today’s races have drawn more than 270 competitors—l4l for the senior race of six miles and a quarter, 75 for the junior four-mile event, and 55 for the colts (under 16) race, of one mile and a half. A colts’ section for this race was provided for the first time last season, and was so successful that it is now to be a regular feature. Most of these young runners will be having their first interclub race, and the issue is very open. J. C. Daly (Marist) and K. E. Williams (Christchurch) appear the two most likely contenders for the individual honours in the senior division. The senior teams’ race should be well contestsed. with University striving hard to maintain its unbeaten record. Strong opposition will come from Marist, Olympic and Christchurch. J. K. McDonald (Olympic) has built up an impressive list of wins as a junior, and today’s race will be his last before he becomes a senior. On recent form he is unlikely to be beaten. His team should also maintain its unbeaten record. The senior race will start at the Halswell Hall on the main Akaroa highway at 2 p.m., the colts at 2.10 p.m., and juniors at 3 p.m.
