YOUTH SENTENCED FOR RAPE
FIVE YEARS IN BORSTAL INSTITUTION Clifton Glenpatrick Walsh Birss, known as Clifton Glenpatrick Walsh, aged 17, a farm worker, appeared before Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court yesterday for sentence on charges that he committed rape on a girl, aged 16 years and 3 months, at Eiffelton, near Ashburton, on May .21, and that he assaulted the girl, so as to cause her actual bodily harm. He was ordered to be detained in a Borstal Institution for five years. Birss, who had pleaded guilty to the charges in the Lower Court at Ashr burton on June 8, and had been committed for sentence, was not represented by counsel. When asked whether he had anything to say. before being sentenced he replied: ‘‘No. I have nothing to say.” ‘‘Birss, there is obviously only one thing I can do in your case and that is to send you to a Borstal Institution for a very long time, until you learn to be more responsible in your conduct ' said his Honour.
