FURTHER REPLY BY MR R. H. MCDONALD “Mr O’Shea’s audacious inconsistency is as illogical as his argument,” said the secretary of the Canterbury District Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour (Mr R. H. McDonald) yesterday, in a further reply to Mr A, P. O’Shea, general secretary of Federated Farmers. Mr McDonald’s statement ,is the latest in an exchange prompted by Mr O’Shea’s address to the annual conference of North Canterbury Federated Farmers. "Speaking at Timaru Mr O’Shea attacked the 40-hour week, businessmen, the welfare state and ‘state-conferred privileges,’ said Mr McDonald. “I objected to his attack on the 40-hour week, and he replied claiming that his main target had been ‘the dishonest taxation system for farmers.’ Accepting Mr O'Shea’s assurance, I then corrected him oh his chosen ground. “In his further retort Mr O’Shea avoids argument on farmer’s taxation, showing that he did not have a case in the fist place His comments were, without doubt, only intended to raise cheers from the farmers. Mr O’Shea had a sympathetic audience. He appealed to their emotions—not intelligence—and thought that the gallery play would cover a thin story.”
