EFFECT OF PAINTS ON HEALTH

An address on modern paints, paint removers and solvents, and their effects on the health of the users was given by Dr. A. Douglas, of the Health Department, to members of the Master Painters’ Guild in Christchurch recently. Dr. Douglas warned against the use of many new solvents for removing dirt from the hands. These solvents, he said, caused a good deal of poisonous irritation of the skin. The solvents should not be used in confined spaces, as they often had poisonous fumes. Discussing “colour dynamics”—the scientific use of colours in such places as schoolrooms and factories—Dr. Douglas mentioned an instance overseas where a group of backward pupils 'had made remarkable progress when their room was painted scarlet. Two films were shown on the correct use of scaffolding and ladders. The president of the guild (Mr S. Falkingham) thanked Dr. Douglas for his address.
