TROTTING BUCCANEER WINS STAKES

FIELD WELL BEATEN AT ASHBURTON

brave company makes AMENDS

Buccaneer outclassed the opposition in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winJer meeting yesterday, and proved himself to be the best two-year-old this season. It was his third win from IP ur J? tarts ' his other wins being in the Tim ar u Nursery Stakes and the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s Juvenile Handicap. ? Buccaneer’s win gave his ownertrainer, B. Grice, his first win in the Sapling Stakes. Grice has raced very few two-year-olds, and last season, when he was represented by Jaunty and Lodestar, was the first time for ®®£ years that he had raced a horse Of that age. Buccaneer began well and took control at the end of two furlongs. G. Holmes let him stretch out in the back straight, and he put a big break on the field, having an advantage of six lengths at the straight entrance. He did not have to do his best to beat Scottish Brigade by three lengths. His time of 3min 20 l-ssec was one second outside Farlena’s race record, an outstanding effort on a dead track. Scottish Brigade was not disgraced. He received a poor run not far away from the leaders, and he fought on gamely in the straight. More should be heard of this son of Light Brigade and Scottish Lady. Sure King finished a good third, and showed now unlucky he was to have been eliminated from the Juvenile Handicap at Addington on May 23. Lynberne was disappointing after being slow away, and he was well beaten in fourth place. The others were beaten off.

largely through the strong pace set ' by Buccaneer. Brave Company won his sixth race for the season, and brought his earnings for the period to £2025 when he won the Ashburton County Handicap. His effort was full of merit 1 as he travelled wide out most of the way, and fought back when challenged in the straight. Other sound performances during the day were Arriba’s win in the Trial Handicap and Blue Admiral’s second to Battle Royal in the Mayfield Handicap. Blue 1 Admiral, which started from 60 yards, recorded 4min 28 l-ssec for the two miles, • a grand effort on a dead track. He might have won had his driver not eased up 1 over the last few yards. The meeting was held In fine weather 1 before a good attendance. The track • was dead, although it ’ provided good ! going. i The Brave Company-Peter Polo doubles combination returned £ll 12s 6d for £l. 1 There were 1072 successful 10s tickets. 1 Totalisator investments for the day . amounted to £62,862, including £4392 on J the double, compared with £60,236 10s \ last year. The total for the two days , was £110,264, compared with £104,619 last year. Buccaneer Wins Easily Buccaneer began well from towards the outside of the field in the New Zealand • Sapling Stakes, and he raced through to the front at the end of just over two : furlongs. He put a break on the field racing past the five-furlong post, and at the straight entrance he was six lengths clear of Grand Monarch, with Lynberne, Santa Amada, Young Wexford, Scottish , Brigade, and Sure King handy. He was still well clear of Lynberne, Young Wexford, Scottish Brigade, and Sure King ; at the furlong, and he just coasted over the last 100 yards to have an advantage i of three lengths at the post. Scottish Brigade finished on solidly to take second place. He started from the : second line and, although he was never really far away, he received none the best of the running. Sure King, which had been a good way back early, finished on for third two lengths back. His placing was full of merit. Lynberne, which broke at the start, made no Impression in the straight, and he was beaten off eight lengths away in fourth place. He was three lengths in front of Jack Direct and Young Wexford, with four lengths to Blacksmith, Sue Scott, and Grand Monarch. Hula Rose broke and checked Blacksmith at the start, and others to lose B round included Stylish Lynda and Sue cott. Scotch Girl refused to settle down and took no part in the race, while Brahman also refused to pace kindly until he was in a hopeless position. Brave Company’s Win Brave Company made amends for his defeat on the first day of the meeting when he won the Ashburton County Handicap in a keen finish. Brave Company hid none the best of the running. He was slow away, and he was five or six wide racing out of the straight. He continued his run wide out to be second on the outside of Virginia Scott, just behind Monte Casino, at the mile. He challenged Monte Casino early in the run home, and had his measure at the furlong, where they were closely attended by Brava, Nature Girl, Eileen Lillian, and Rosy Mom. Brave Company held on gamely under pressure and won well by half a length. Rosy Morn finished very fast on the rails for second. She had been a good way back most of the way, and had to work hard to get clear. Monte Casino was only a nose away third, a length in front of Brava, with Eileen Lillian, Fair Annette, Girl Black, and Ballymena right up next. Brava, Magellan, Safeguard, Recent Choice, Chief Lochiel, Royal Brigade and Culture gave ground in the early running and Au Revoir broke at the end of two furlongs. PlMlngs Reversed Spring Edition won the Winter Handicap, but after an inquiry the placings were reversed and Trout Stream was awarded the race. Moreta made most of the pace, with Trout Stream receiving a good run just behind the leaders. Runing to the straight, Moreta still had charge from Grattan Arrow, Ice Drift, Trout Stream, Gold Relic, Spring Edition and Defiance. Trout Stream shot to the front as soon as the field straightened up, and at the furlong she was closely attended by Spring Edition, Defiance, Gold Relic, Radiant Diamond, and Bronze Indian. Spring Edition looked to have the measure of Trout Stream about 70 yards from the post, but she ran in, and M. Holmes had to check Trout Stream. Spring Edition won by a length, but the placings were later reversed. Spring Edition had never been far away in the running, and, if she races up to that effort, she should soon win. Bronze Indian made up a lot of ground to be third. He was slow away and was checked with about six furlongs to run. He appeared to be In a hopeless position with three furlongs to run, and he should soon make amends. Radiant Diamond was another to make up ground in the straight, and he was half a length back in fourth place, just ahead of Defiance, with Gold Relic, Chance and Dunvegan at the head of the others. Grattan Arrow, Spring Edition, Bonnie Opal and Errol’s Pal were among those to give ground at the start. „ Battle Royal Wins at Last Battle Royal had an overdue win in the Mayfield Handicap, but he might have been lucky to beat Blue Admiral. Fairy Dell made the early pace, with Blue Admiral racing wide out to go round the field. Blue Admiral joined Fogbound in the lead with six furlongs to run They were together with three furlongs to run, but Blue Admiral worked clear racing to the straight where Fogbound. Battle Royal, General Lee, Executive, Fairy Dell and Full Fling were handiest of the others. Battle Royal joined Blue Admiral at the furlong, and they fought out a great finish, with M. Holmes showing to advantage behind Battle Royal, which won by a neck. Blue Admiral trotted an outstanding race, and his 4min 28 l-ssec for the two miles has seldom been bettered on the track by a horse in his class. Executive, which had broken at the start, finished on for third four lengths back, clear of the surprise favourite. Fogbound, with Black Market and Full Fling at the head of the others, which were well spread out. Results:— LONGBEACH HANDICAP, of £225trotters; 3min 41sec class; one mile and a half.—s, 5 A. W.
