THE CUTTY SARK
£150,000 Raised For . Preservation (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 1. The Cutty Sark, which has been used for training cadets of the Thames Nautical Training College, H.M.S Worcester, was accepted by the Duke of Edinburgh on behalf of the Cutty Sark Preservation Society, of which he is patron, at a short ceremony aboard. An appeal was launched last month for £250,000 to preserve the 84-years-oid tea clipper, and to move her to a permanent berth at Greenwich.
The fund has already reached £150.000 sterling. Speaking from the poop of the Cutty Sark, the Duke of Edinburgh said: “Four hundred years ago the Queen ordered the Golden Hind to be preserved. Her authority was not sufficient to overcome the lack of knowledge of those days, and the ship fell to bits 200 years later. I think that with the scientific knowledge we have nowadays it will be almost possible to guarantee that this ship will be preserved for ever.”
