OPEN TOURNAMENT AT RUSSLEY
R. G. PENLINGTON WINS A GRADE
The final of the A grade section of the Russley Golf Club’s Coronation tournament provided some of the best golf seen during the three-day tournament. Yesterday, in a keenly contested match which went to the twentieth hole, R. G. Penlington beat G. Appleton 1 up.
Penlington established an early lead by winning four of the first five holes, mainly through good work on and around the green. Appleton settled down and at the sixteenth they were all square. Penlington won the seventeenth with a birdie 3 and Appleton, taking two putts to Penlington’s three, squared the game at the eighteenth. The nineteenth was halved. There was little between the two tee shots at the twentieth, and both played poor seconds. Penlington’s approach carried him to within 10ft of the pin. Appleton’s approach was short and he took three putts to Penlington’s two. The B grade final was won by R. C. Sweet and R. F. Christie won the C grade final.
