GOLF SOUTH ISLAND TITLE

PLAY AT TIMARU THIS WEEKEND

LARGE REPRESENTATIVE ENTRY

The prospects are good for a success- • ful South Island amateur golf championship; which will be played on the Timaru Club's course at Highfield this week-end. I The entries include most of the leading! players in the South Island, and several I of the younger ones who did not com-' pete In the recent interprovincial tournament will have an opportunity of. matching themselves against the more' experienced players. A total of 91 entries i has been received, and of these 68 will play in the major championship. The large and representative entry in- 1 dicates that Timaru is a convenient! venue for the tournament. It was last' held there in 1948, when a similarly good entry was received. The course will pro-, vide a good test as it will be playing' full length. Heavy rain has fallen in ‘ Timaru during the ’last few weeks. Although the fairways will be heavy, it is to be hoped that the committee will not have* to use the placing rule as it tends to give the weaker players an advantage over those who are able to play the more difficult forcing shots necessary from tight lies. Some of the competitors have had practice rounds this week, and have found that the course "is playing about 1000 yards longer than its normal length. The greens are at present the firmest part of the course, and are about medium-paced I. B. Cromb, who won the title at Nelson last year, will be a competitor. Other Christchurch competitors include nearly all the young players, who are improving with each tournament. Canterbury’s leading player, M. W. Stanley, heads the list, which includes C. J. Ward, L. A. Watson, N. M. Fowke. H. J. Gosset, R. D. Kearns, K. C. Kearns, J. G. Mangan, J. G. Scott. P. Lewis, and D. C. Watson. Timaru is also well represented with E. G. Kerr, G. P. Vesty, J. R. L. MacKay, J. B. Forrest, and the 15-year-old schoolboy, lan Harvey. The most notable absentee from the tournament will be the former amateur champion, A. Gibbs (Otago). Of the other Otago players competing, A. R. Timms, on his performance in the interprovincial tournament, will have a chance of winning his second South Island title. B. V. Wright, another former amateur cham pion, has entered from Otago. Highfield is the course on which he learned to play golf, and he has many fine performances to his credit there.

Vesty and Harvey are two of the young Timaru players who will be keenly watched. Only recently Vesty completed the course in 66, and Harvey, in •gaining a club handicap of 4 last week, completed the course in 69 (scratch figures). The championship will be decided over four rounds of match play on Sunday and Monday, after two qualifying rounds on Saturday. One of the New Zealand selectors, Mr J. A. Scouler (Otago) is a competitor, and the form of some of the young players will be watched with interest. DRAW FOR SATURDAY
