WAIMATE EVENTS

GOLD DIRECT HAS EASY WIN The Ashburton-trained Gold Bar mare, Gold Direct, convincingly won the Hook Trot Handicap at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday. Taken to the front at the end of three furlongs, she made all the running, and won unchallenged by two lengths. There was a struggle for the minor placings. Southern Blade, which had covered a good deal of extra ground, held off the favourite, Maytime, by a neck for second. Bedivus was only a head away in fourth place. Then there was a gap of three lengths to Veneer which was followed by Clever Jack, Happy Landings, Ellenella, Rosario, and Sandra Kay. Bedivus. Rosario, Coincident, and Prince Volomite all made mistakes at the start, the latter nearly unseating his driver.

Maura Grattan was the first to show out, but Gold Direct was taken round the field into the lead on racing out of the straight for the first time. At the halfmile Gold Direct was a length clear of Veneer, with Southern Blade (on the outside), Maura Grattan. Maytime. Sandra Kay, Young Erin. Bedivus, and Happy Landings following in that order. Gold Direct increased her lead after straightening up. Southern Blade was then under pressure, and Maytime and Bedivus were doing the best of the others. Gold Direct did not have to be driven out to win well. Garrymede upset calculations when he won the Morven Trot Handicap, returning more than £27 on the win machine. The Sandydale gelding was always handy, and with three furlongs to go, he ran £ast the pacemaker, Quicksand, to estabsh a lead of three lengths before the field straightened up. He lasted to beat the faster-finishing Royal Crown by half a length. Lady French, which had steadily made up her ground from 48 yards, was two lengths back, .third. The favourite. Maytime, which did not have a good run, was a close fourth. Coincident was eight lengths back in fifth place followed by Clever Jack, Nevada Queem Top Mast. Clemency, and All In. Horace Roy broke at the start, and Royal Crown was slow to move away. Quicksand soon reached the front, and he made the running to the half-mile from Coincident. Garrymede. Royal Crown. Child's Play, Lady French. Maytime, and Clemency. Garrymede was clear at the straight entrance, but at the furlong Royal Crown was closing on him. and Lady French, Maytime. Nevada Queen, and Clever Jack were showing up. Although hard driven, Royal Crown could not overhaul Garrymede before the post was reached.
