NEW CHURCH AT HOON HAY
OPENING BY BISHOP JOYCE The Most Rev. E. M. Joyce, Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, blessed and opened the Church of the Assumption at Hoon Hay yesterday afternoon. The church, which is of wood, will be used as a school when the permanent church is constructed. Visitors were welcomed by the Rev. Father J. Galvin, parish priest of Hoon Hay. The Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. Kennedy, parish priest of Beckenham, the Rt Rev. Monsignor J. Hanrahan, of Addington, and the Rev. P. Timoney, of Papanui, addressed the gathering. Bishop Joyce, in his address, congratulated the parish priest and the residents of Hoon Hay on the blessing and opening of their own parish church. He spoke of the rapid development on the outskirts of the city, and said that it was the policy of the Church to have facilities for Mass in all new suburban areas.
