BATTERIES MADE IN N.Z.
MAKER REPLIES TO CRITICISM (New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 24. New Zealand batteries are better and cheaper than any others, said the president of the New Zealand Storage Battery Maunfacturers’ Association (Mr John E. Salmon) yesterday. He was replying to the council of the North Island Motor Union, which on Thursday, decided to ask Mr Salmon’s association why the cost of vehicle batteries had not decreased in line with the lowered price of lead. “Certainly the price of lead has dropped,” said Mr Salmon, “but like the price control authority the motor union was not taking into account the numerous items on which costs have increased. The industry has not yet felt the benefit of the reduced lead prices, and will not so do until the stocks of higher-priced lead have been exhausted. The costs of electricity, freight and labour have increased, and are still increasing beyond the measure of the decrease in lead prices.”
