PURCHASE OF 478 ACRES
MAORI LAND COURT’S CONSENT SOUGHT (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 22.
An application for the confirmation 1 of a resolution passed by Maori owners at Onepu on April 27 to seH 478 acres to the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company, Ltd., for £5O an acre, came before Judge Harvey at a special sitting of the Maori Land Court at Te Teko today. Decision on whether the sale will be allowed was reserved by the Court. Mr J. F. Keane said the Government valuation of the land was £23 an acre. As the company was offering £5O an acre, confirmation of the sale would not be contrary to the owners’ interests. The company proposed to spend nearly £20,000.000 in establishing an industry, and within two or three years there, would be a modern town with an expected population of 10,000. People were having “prosperity brought to their doorsteps.” Objections to the sale were raised by five owners. Some wished to retain the land because it had been inherited, and others did not wish to lose their frontages to the Tarawera river.
