T.B. TESTING OF CATTLE
Sir,—With the issue of its recent circular to cattle breeders the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association has implemented its intention to enforce the T.B. testing on show cattle. That one-third of the cattle (Government veterinarian’s authentic figure) at the last show were T.B. tested is no mandate to the association to demand that the other two thirds should submit to T.B. test. During the last 12 months errors, doubts and queries throughout the country have caused breeders to lose faith in T.B. testing. In pedigree breeding age enhances value as cattle become proven matrons or sires; but it is also with age that the incidence of T.B. makes itself felt more. Breeders generally are quite amenable to accept T.B. testing carried out with proven practical efficiency and with some consideration to breeders’ problems, but certainly not at the dictates and personal fads ot members of an agricultural and pastoral association committee.—Yours, etc., W. J. BECKETT. Honorary Secretary. North Canterbury Jersey Cattle Club. May 22, 1953.
