AUCKLAND BEATS WEST COAST
GAME PLAYED IN HEAVY RAIN
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 17. The Auckland Rugby League representatives beat West Coast by 12 points (four tries) to 2 (a penalty goal) at Carlaw Park on Saturday. Heavy showers made the ground a sea of mud. Play of a surprisingly good standard was the deciding factor in favour of Auckland, whose forwards rose to the occasion splendidly. From the outset, it was evident that the Auckland back line had the result in safe keeping, and the Auckland hooker gained possession with monotonous regularity. Auckland led, 6-2, at half-time. West Coast was awarded many penalties from scrum breaches, > and four penalty goals were missed from comparatively easy positions, but the ball was soon waterlogged, and excuses could be advanced for the failure of I. Hay and W. McLennan. Even D. White failed with six goal attempts. Nevertheless, West Coast maintained the pressure throughout, and the forwards battled in vain to penetrate the Auckland defence.
For Auckland, tries were scored by V. Bakalich (2), J. Edwards, and B. Singe. For West Coast, I. Hay kicked a penalty goal.
