Mr S. S. Dean has been appointed Government member and chairman of the Fire Service Council, in successton to the late Mr R. G. Butcher. Mr Dean has been a member of the council since its Inception in 1949 as the appointee of the council of Fire and Accident Underwriters’ Associations of New Zealand. He has also been actingchairman of the council since Mr Butcher’s death, and is chairman of the Wellington Fire Board.—(PA.)

Mr R. L. W. Averill, who completed his Master of Agricultural Science degree at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, last year, has been granted a bursary by the Wool Board to study overseas. He has applied for admission to Cambridge university where he hopes to work under Dr. John Hammond, who has done notable work on carcase quality and animal improvement Mr Averill hopes to leave New Zealand about August. The Educational Institute of Scotland intends to confer a fellowship on the secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute (Mr G. R. Ashbridge, of Ohai) “for signal services to education.” This was announced at the annual conference of the New Zealand institute yesterday by the president (Miss V. Hayward). The award would recognise Mr Ashbridge’s service to New Zealand education and his efforts to foster good relations between the institutes of each country, said Miss Hayward.—(P.A) The Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, decided yesterday to send a message of sympathy to the relatives of Sir Thomas Hunter, a former vice-chancel-lor of the University of New Zealand. “Through his death New Zealand has lost one who has done much lor education,” said the chairman of the board.
