POTATO CROP IN SOUTH ISLAND
MOVE FOR INCREASE NEXT SEASON (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 11. As part of the Potato Board’s programme to encourage growers to increase their acreages next season, the chairman of the board (Mr F. C. Jurgens) will visit the main South Island potato-growing districts in July. He will probably be accompanied by the Government-appointed member of the board. Mr J. H. Claridge, of the Department of Agriculture. Mr Jurgens will meet contract growers and discuss production problems with them. He will visit Ashburton. Darfield, Christchurch, Leeston, Rangiora, Temuka, Willowbridge, Tuatapere and Balclutha. Mr Jurgens, who is a grower, is in close contact with the main North Island growing districts of Manawatu and Rangitikei. The secretary of the Potato Board (Mr N. H. McHugh) said today that production figures were being revised. The new price for next season’s crop would probably be fixed before Mr Jurgens met South Island growers.
