TROTTING OAMARU CLUB’S MEETING

JUVENILE STAKES TO LYNBERNE

GOOD WIN OVER GRAND MONARCH Lynberne proved himself the best two-year-old seen this season when he won the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, the main race at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. Lynberne was an even-money favourite, and he dismayed his many supporters when he broke at the start and lost at least 36 yards. D. J. Townley did not press him until near the' half-mile post, and he made a strong run to be third with two furlongs to run. He challenged Grand Monarch in the straight, but had to be kept up to it to win by a length. It was a most impressive effort. If he can be made to begin more smoothly, he should have little difficulty in winning whatever races are chosen for him during the remainder of the season. Lynberne’s win was most popular. He is owned in Oamaru by Mrs F. E. Stringer. He is trained at Tinwald by J. Grice, who raced last season’s leading two-year-old, Rupee, a brother to Lynberne. Scottish Brigade was rather disappointing. He was never far away, but tangled slightly and lost three or four lengths near the two-furlong post. He finished on again for fourth, without

looking a possibility. Brave Company won his fifth race for the season when he outstayed Kimberley in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap. Brave Company was never near the fence at any stage of the race and most of the way he was three sulkies out. His performance was outstanding, and he should develop high-class form. Another brilliant performance was that of Merval, winner of the Papakaio Handicap. She broke at the start > and was a long way from the leaders. She was still last with five furlongs to run, but she sprinted brilliantly and over the last two and a half furlongs to win comfortably. The double was run on the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap and the Papakaio Handicap, the Brave CompanyMerval combination returning £2l 13s for £l.

The meeting was held in fine weather before a moderate attendance. The track was fast. The club adhered strictly to the advertised starting times, and the last race -was started two minutes late. Its effort was a lesson to both country and metropolitan clubs in Canterbury, where time lags of half an hour are not uncommon. The totalisator investments for the day Amounted to £39,841, including £3256 10s on the double, compared with £53,741 last year, a decrease of £13,900. Juvenile Stakes Lynberne gained an overdue win when he great Grand Monarch in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes. The Gold Chief gelding broke at the start and lost about 36 yards. He raced wide out over the last mile, and was four sulkies out in the back straight. He was on the outside of Hula Rose, just behind Grand Monarch and Sure King, at the straight entrance, with Scottish Brigade, Jack Direct, Final Glow, Scotch Girl, and Stylish Lynda handiest of the others. Grand Monarch

looked likely to have an easy win until Lynberne finished solidly under a hard drive wide out. Lynberne responded gamely, and he outstayed Grand Monarch by a length. Grand Monarch was never far away, and he forced the pace with Sure King over the last three furlongs. Final Glow, which had never been far away, finished on once she got clear and was a head back third, half a length in front of Scottish Brigade. The lastnamed was handily placed until he lost several lengths with just over two furlongs to run. He finished solidly. Hula Rose was right up in fifth place, iust ahead of Sure King, with three engths to Jack Direct and Scotch Girl. Publisher, Night Wind, Nipalong, Con Scott, and Stormy Chief were among those to lose ground early in the race. ' Favourite Wins Brave Company, which ran wide throughout the race, showed great gameness to win the R. A. McDowell Memorial

Handicap. The Light Brigade four-year-old was a little slow at the start, but he raced round the field to be about fifth or sixth four lengths from the pacemaker. Gold Relic, at the end of one mile. Gold Relic had had enough at the straight entrance, where Defiance, which had had a perfect run, and Brave Company were on terms with her, just ahead of a bunched field in which Kemberley, Hallstand, Radiant Diamond, Rola Veyor, and Cincinnatus were showing up. . Kimberley looked-to have the measure of Brave Company at the half-furlong, but Brave Company fought back gamely to win well. Rola Veyor, which had covered a lot of extra ground, finished solidly to beat Defiance -for third. There was considerable merit in his placing. Radiant- Diamond, which had been at the rear early in the race, finished on for fifth, ahead of Wentworth, Hallstand Squire Dillon, Gretna Green, and Errol's Pal. Radiant Diamond, Magician, Sea Pirate, Bonnie Opal, and Gretna Green lost ground early in the race. Magician returned to the birdcage with a buckled wheel.

Merval Brilliant Merval was allowed to go out at a false price in the Papakaio Handicap—she was the 4, S favourite—and she gave a brilliant performance to win. She broke at the start and added at least 24 yards to her handicap, of th& same amount. She was at the rear of a bunched field and had about 15 horses in front of hei- racing to the half-mile. I. M. Scoop sent her after the leaders, and one furlong and a half further on she went to the front. She was going easily at the straight entrance clear of Thorndell, which had made most of the pace, Dancing Years, Bon Marche, Jet Control. Right Away, Black Douglas, and Sergeant Nelson. Thorndell challenged in the straight, but

he had no chance of beating Merval, which won well. Thorndell had every chance, and he ran on well under a hard drive to be a clear second. There was a battle for the other placIngs, Sergeant Nelson, which had been handy, getting third place, just ahead of Bon Marche, with Black Douglas, Dancing- Years, and Jet Control right up next, a length in front of Sandygowan, Right Away, and Romanesque. Ace, which interfered with Gift, Radiant Spark, Sandygowan, Romanesque, and Black Douglas were among those to give ground at the start. Another Upset Outsiders filled the first three places in the C. L. Ayson Handicap, the winner being Peace Pipe, another Southland horse. Peace Pipe was never far from the leaders, but he raced wide out most of the way. He was seventh at the halfmile, but moved up smartly racing to the straight, where he was just behind Bonus, with Isla Devan, Windsor Maid, Moss Hall, Khula, Bronze Indian, and Ice Drift showing up. Peace Pipe was clear at the furlong, but he had to be kept up to it to hold off Ice Drift by a length. Ice Drift did well to finish so close up, as he started from 24 yards. He began well and was never far away. He finished very fast once he worked clear. Bonus, which made most of the pace, battled on for third two lengths back, a long head in front of Brooksby Hall, one of the backmarkers, which ran his best race for some time. Bronze Indian, which had been slow away, Gold Rey, Windsor Maid, Moss Hall, and Isla Devan headed the others. Ice Drift, Barney Dillon, Lassoloc, Super Mission, and Luck Ahead were among those to lose ground early In the race.
